September 25, 2012
One of the owners of Tuthilltown Spirits, said they're still open for tastings following an explosion and fire at Tuthilltown Spirits distillery in Gardiner, N.Y. A structure fire at the distillery was located on the second floor, which housed some barrels of liquor.
Officials believe vapors collected on the second floor found an undetermined ignition source and exploded, causing the east wall tp blow out along with the barrels on the second floor exploding but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The distillery is one of three buildings that make up Tuthilltown Spirits. There's also a tasting room and shop, and an office building.
One distillery employee who was on the west side of the second floor saw the flames rolling across the ceiling.
He started down the stairs and the explosion happened behind him.
The fire was under control within a half hour and out within two hours.
Besides the Gardiner Fire Department, Clintondale, Modena, New Paltz, Plattekill, Shawagunk Valley, Walker Valley and Wallkill fire departments all responded to the fire, along with the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.
